The first element of the transfermium disputes. Dubna reported it in 1964 and proposed kurchatovium; Berkeley reported it in 1969 and proposed rutherfordium, and each rejected the other's evidence. The argument ran for three decades and was settled by the international commission only in 1997, which assigned shared credit and, as part of a package, gave element 104 the American name and element 105 the Russian one. Rutherfordium honours Ernest Rutherford. Its longest-lived isotope survives about an hour, and only a few hundred atoms have ever been made.

Overview
Rutherfordium was the first of the transactinide elements, first reported in the 1960s with rival claims from Dubna in the Soviet Union and from Berkeley, touching off a prolonged naming controversy. The name eventually chosen honours Ernest Rutherford, the New Zealand-born physicist regarded as the father of nuclear physics. Rutherfordium is an intensely radioactive synthetic metal, existing only for moments and studied a few atoms at a time. Its most stable isotope lasts around an hour, yet chemists have managed to show, working with single atoms, that it behaves like a heavier relative of hafnium and zirconium, confirming its place in group four as the first element beyond the actinides.
Rutherford, who identified the atomic nucleus through the celebrated gold-foil scattering experiments carried out with Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden in 1911, had earlier won the 1908 Nobel Prize, in chemistry rather than physics, for his work on radioactive decay, a classification he found so amusing that he joked he had himself been transmuted, in an instant, from a physicist into a chemist, a quip later element-namers evidently appreciated when they attached his name to the element that opened the transactinide series.

Rutherfordium honours Ernest Rutherford, who first showed the atom to have a tiny dense nucleus and who transmuted one element into another, the conceptual founder of the science that makes synthetic elements. Its naming, however, was anything but simple: the Soviet team at Dubna proposed kurchatovium, after the physicist Igor Kurchatov, while the Berkeley team proposed rutherfordium, and the clash over this and the neighbouring elements grew into the long dispute known as the Transfermium Wars, a Cold War quarrel over who had discovered, and so could name, the heaviest elements. Only in 1997 did an international compromise settle the names.
Rutherfordium has no ancient or esoteric tradition, being a synthetic element; its story is inseparable from the geopolitics of its naming. During the years the naming dispute remained unresolved, chemistry bodies used a neutral placeholder, unnilquadium, built from Latin numeral roots meaning simply one-zero-four, a systematic naming convention still used today for any newly claimed element awaiting a permanent name, and one that quietly avoided taking sides while the argument over rutherfordium and kurchatovium played out. The same 1997 compromise that settled rutherfordium's name simultaneously resolved the disputes over several of its immediate neighbours in one coordinated international agreement.
