Kyerim and dzogrim, the generation and completion stages, are the two-stage structure of deity practice in the highest yoga tantras: in the generation stage the practitioner builds the deity's form and mandala in visualisation, training pure perception, and in the completion stage the visualisation is dissolved and practice works directly with the subtle body's winds, channels and drops toward the clear light. Every major sadhana of the highest tantras is organised on this frame. Both stages are transmission-restricted, entered through empowerment and practised under a qualified lama, and the atlas records the structure at its public level only.

Building the Deity, Then Dissolving Into It
Kyerim, the generation stage, and dzogrim, the completion stage, together form the fundamental two stage structure of deity practice, sadhana, in the highest classes of Buddhist tantra, a division the whole of Vajrayana deity meditation is organised around regardless of which specific deity or tantric cycle a particular practice belongs to. In the generation stage the practitioner systematically visualises and constructs a deity's complete form together with its mandala palace and surrounding retinue in vivid mental detail, a deliberate, effortful act of visualisation the tradition frames as training pure perception, learning to perceive the practitioner's own body, speech and mind as inseparable from the deity's enlightened qualities rather than as an exercise in fantasy or artistic imagination for its own sake.
The completion stage that follows works differently, generally involving the deliberate dissolution of the visualised form back into emptiness and, depending on the specific tantric system, subtle body practices working directly with the channels, winds and drops of the body's energetic system understood in tantric physiology, moving the practitioner from constructed visualisation toward the direct, non conceptual realisation the generation stage is understood to prepare the ground for.
The Grammar Beneath Every Tantric Practice
Kyerim and dzogrim function as the underlying structural grammar shared across the whole of highest yoga tantra practice in Tibetan Buddhism, so that understanding this two stage framework is foundational to understanding how virtually every specific deity practice, and several of the other completion stage yogas catalogued elsewhere in the atlas, actually operate, even though the specific visualised deity, mandala and detailed technique differ considerably from one tantric cycle to another. Both stages require formal empowerment before a practitioner may properly undertake them, and the generation stage in particular is generally taught as preparatory training a student must complete under a qualified teacher's guidance before undertaking the subtler, more advanced completion stage practices, a graduated structure the tradition maintains consistently across its many specific tantric lineages and deity cycles.
The atlas records here the conceptual architecture of generation and completion stage practice, its central place in Vajrayana tantra as a whole, and its empowerment bound transmission, without offering the specific visualisation content, mantra or subtle body technique belonging to any particular deity practice, material that remains, across the tradition, bound to formal transmission from a qualified teacher.
