Becoming aware, while dreaming, that one is dreaming, and to some degree directing what follows. In Tibetan Buddhism it is the ground of milam, dream yoga, one of the six yogas of Naropa, where the point is not the content of the dream but the recognition that waking experience has the same constructed character; it is preparatory to the yoga of the intermediate state after death and is taught inside a retreat structure rather than as a technique on its own. Sufi and Islamic traditions of the true dream, and Hindu analysis of the states of consciousness, occupy nearby ground. The secular practice taught today aims at the recognition itself, using dream journals, reality checks during the day, and waking briefly in the early hours before returning to sleep, and it treats the resulting dream as a place to explore rather than as a doctrine to verify.

Awake within the Dream
Lucid dreaming is the experience of becoming aware, while dreaming, that one is dreaming, and sometimes of gaining a measure of deliberate control over the content of the dream. Unlike most claimed out-of-body or visionary practices, lucid dreaming has been established as a genuine and studyable phenomenon by scientific research: in laboratory studies dreamers who became lucid were able to signal their awareness to researchers by prearranged patterns of eye movements while remaining asleep, confirming that a person can be consciously aware within a dream. The state has since been investigated as a window onto consciousness, sleep and the dreaming brain. Techniques for inducing lucidity, among them the habit of regularly questioning during waking life whether one is dreaming, and methods of returning to sleep with the intention of recognising the dream, have been developed and studied, and can increase the frequency of lucid dreams for many people.
Lucid dreaming has both a modern experimental and a long spiritual lineage. It has been cultivated for centuries within Tibetan Buddhism as "dream yoga," a practice in which the meditator learns to recognise and work within the dream state as a means of training awareness, loosening attachment to the apparent solidity of experience, and preparing for the transitions of death; the recognition that the dream is a dream is used as a step toward recognising the dreamlike, insubstantial nature of waking experience itself. In its modern secular form lucid dreaming is pursued for exploration, creativity, the confronting of nightmares, and simple wonder. It occupies an unusual place among the practices catalogued here in being at once a technique with genuine scientific validation and a discipline with a deep contemplative history, the two meeting on the common ground of trained awareness within sleep.
Proving It Happens in a Sleep Laboratory
Lucid dreaming remained a disputed and largely anecdotal claim until a laboratory demonstration in 1980 gave it a form of external proof. Stephen LaBerge, then a graduate student at Stanford, had a lucid dreamer signal from inside a dream using pre-agreed eye movements, distinct left-right patterns the sleeper had practised making deliberately while dreaming, which were recorded on an electro-oculograph and matched against the timing of REM sleep on a simultaneous EEG, giving researchers a way to verify from outside that a subject was both asleep and consciously aware within the dream at a specific, timestamped moment, since ordinary eye muscles remain active during REM sleep even though the rest of the body is paralysed.
LaBerge went on to found the Lucidity Institute and to develop devices and induction techniques, most notably reality testing, the habit of questioning during waking hours whether one is dreaming, on the theory that the habit eventually carries over into the dream state itself, alongside the wake-back-to-bed method of waking briefly during the early morning REM-heavy hours before returning to sleep with the intention to remain aware. This laboratory verification is what separates the modern secular practice from the older contemplative traditions it runs parallel to: Tibetan dream yoga and Sufi accounts of the true dream were transmitted and evaluated entirely within a teacher-student framework with no external measurement possible, while the post-1980 practice can point to a controlled experiment as evidence that the basic claim, conscious awareness during verified sleep, is physiologically real rather than only reported.
