Prayers

207 entries. Click any to see everything it connects to.

Address to a deity, spirit or other sacred power in words, spoken, sung or silent, as distinct from a hymn's sung praise or a mantra's recitation of a sound valued independently of its sense. Each entry gives the prayer's text or a close account of it, its tradition, and the function it serves, since this section subdivides prayer by function, petition, praise, thanksgiving, blessing and dozens of finer variants, rather than by tradition alone. Some entries here are grouped by a fact about the record, restricted access or uncertain manuscript history, rather than by what the prayer asks or praises, and the atlas keeps that distinction visible rather than folding it into the functional scheme.

What Counts as a Prayer Here

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Prayer, in the atlas's use, is any communicative or contemplative act a tradition directs toward a divine or transcendent reality: a petition asking for something, an act of praise or thanksgiving, a confession, a fixed liturgical text repeated in common, or a silent contemplative practice with no spoken words at all. What holds the type together is direction rather than form; a prayer can be as short as a single repeated phrase or as long as a full liturgy, spoken aloud or held entirely in silence.

Each entry describes a prayer's form, its place within its tradition's life and what the tradition itself says the prayer is for, without functioning as an instruction to say it. Some prayers recorded here belong to traditions that restrict who may recite them, when, or under what preparation, and where that is so the atlas states the restriction as a fact about the tradition rather than supplying the prayer's wording as something to be used. Description and instruction are kept apart on purpose throughout this type.

An entry also records, where it is known, what a prayer is understood to accomplish within its own tradition, comfort, communion, obligation fulfilled, a request answered, since traditions themselves disagree sharply on that question and the atlas records each tradition's own answer rather than adopting one.

The Comparative Study of Prayer

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Academic interest in prayer as a subject in its own right, rather than as raw material for theology, is usually traced to the psychologist William James, whose 1902 lectures published as The Varieties of Religious Experience treated firsthand accounts of prayer and religious feeling as evidence to be examined rather than doctrine to be either defended or dismissed. The German scholar Friedrich Heiler followed with the first systematic comparison across traditions, proposing a typology running from petitionary prayer asking for a concrete outcome through to a mystical prayer seeking union with the divine and dissolving the sense of a self doing the asking.

That comparative project continues today mainly through anthropology and the psychology of religion, both of which study what praying does for the person praying and for their community, how a prayer is learned, transmitted and altered across generations, and how differently traditions understand what, if anything, a prayer changes. None of that research requires taking a position on whether a prayer is answered, and the strongest work in the field is explicit about setting that question aside.

Later anthropological fieldwork extended the comparison well beyond the literate world traditions Heiler worked from, documenting prayer forms in oral traditions his typology had not accounted for, and the discipline today generally treats his categories as a useful starting map rather than a final, complete classification.
