The ideomotor effect is the well documented phenomenon by which a person makes small, involuntary muscular movements that follow an idea or expectation held in mind, without any awareness of producing the movement themselves. It is the standard scientific explanation offered for a range of apparent psychokinetic and mediumistic phenomena that involve a person's hands resting on or holding an object: table tipping, the planchette of a Ouija board, the divining pendulum, and dowsing rods. In each case the object's motion is attributed to unconscious muscular exertion, amplified by leverage and by the participant's genuine belief that they are not moving it themselves, rather than to any external force. Michael Faraday's 1853 apparatus, which recorded the sequence in which pressure and table movement actually occurred during a seance style sitting, demonstrated that sitters' hands moved the table rather than the reverse, providing the first rigorous experimental support for the mechanism Carpenter had proposed on theoretical grounds the year before.

Carpenter, Chevreul, and Faraday's Table

Michel-Eugene Chevreul, a French chemist, first described the phenomenon in a letter published in 1833, after investigating why a pendulum held perfectly still by a person's hand would nonetheless swing in the direction the holder expected it to, even when the holder was convinced they were exerting no force at all. Chevreul demonstrated that blindfolding the holder, or hiding the pendulum's target from view, stopped the movement, showing that the swing depended on the holder's expectation rather than on any property of the pendulum or its target; he published a fuller account of the finding, extending it to divining rods and table turning, in 1854.

William Benjamin Carpenter, an English physiologist, proposed the general theoretical name for the underlying mechanism in an 1852 lecture to the Royal Institution, terming it ideo-motor action: the principle that holding an idea of a movement in mind, even without conscious intention to act on it, tends to produce a small muscular movement toward carrying it out. Michael Faraday put the theory to a direct experimental test the following year, building an apparatus of card and rubber bands that would visibly indicate whether a sitter's hands were pushing a table or being pushed by it, and found consistently that the hands moved first.

From Parlor Trick to Standard Explanation

Faraday's 1853 experiment settled the mechanical question for the table turning craze then sweeping Europe and America, but it did little to change the minds of sitters who reported, sincerely, that they had felt no exertion at all; the effect works precisely because the movement it produces is involuntary and outside conscious awareness, which is what makes an honest participant's testimony that they did not move the table compatible with the finding that their hands did. The same explanation was later extended to the Ouija board's planchette, the dowsing rod, and any other device in which a participant's hands rest lightly on an object capable of movement.

The ideomotor effect is not treated within psychology as a contested or fringe claim; it is a well replicated feature of human motor control, cited in mainstream research on hypnosis and the placebo response, and, more recently, in criticism of facilitated communication techniques used with nonverbal individuals, where investigators found that a facilitator's own ideomotor movements, not the nonverbal person's intended communication, were producing the typed messages. Within this atlas it functions chiefly as the standard skeptical counter-explanation offered wherever a psychokinetic or mediumistic claim depends on hands resting on a moving object, a category that includes table tipping, spirit board use, and dowsing alike.
