Ibn Muhaysin al-Makki

Muhammad ibn Muhaysin, a Meccan reader also known by the short form Ibn Muhaysin, is credited in the qira'at literature with a reading distinct from Ibn Kathir's canonical Meccan reading, recorded here with Mecca as its reading centre and shadhdh as its standing. No continuous chain of professional reciters carried Ibn Muhaysin's variants forward as a living recitation practice the way Ibn Kathir's reading was carried by al-Bazzi and Qunbul; the reading survives instead through citation in the grammatical and variant literature, recorded here as scholarly record only.

That distinction, between a reading preserved by an unbroken succession of named transmitters and one attested chiefly through citation, is the operative test in Ibn al-Jazari's later framework for the canonical ten, alongside conformity to at least one Uthmanic codex and to Arabic grammar. A reading can meet the second and third conditions and still fail the first if no continuous line of reciters is documented carrying it forward generation after generation; that appears to be Ibn Muhaysin's situation, sharing the reading centre of one of the seven, Mecca, without sharing in the canonical status of Ibn Kathir's transmission from the same city. Ibn Muhaysin's reading is accordingly studied today as one of the documented variant traditions from early Mecca rather than recited as a living transmission.
