The Kyoshu is Omoto's spiritual leader, a position held by women of the Deguchi family in a matrilineal line running from the foundress Deguchi Nao. The role is distinct from the administrative leadership the movement built under Onisaburo Deguchi, who is remembered by the honorific title Holy Teacher rather than as Kyoshu himself.

Legal StatusSourced to the subject's own accountThe office and the movement built around it were forcibly dissolved twice by the Imperial Japanese government, in the Omoto Incidents of 1921 and 1935, the second razing the headquarters buildings at Ayabe and Kameoka and imprisoning the movement's leadership on charges including lese-majeste.
