An opaque watercolor painting on paper from the Pahari Hills, Guler, Himachal Pradesh, India, illustrating a battle scene from the Devi Mahatmya, the Hindu text celebrating the goddess Durga's victory over demonic armies. Durga, mounted on her lion, is placed centrally at left; below her the emaciated Chamunda advances; around them fly and ride the Matrikas, the female manifestations of the Hindu pantheon. Held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, gift of Subhash Kapoor in memory of his parents, 2008.
