A portrait medallion in bois durci, a pressed sawdust composite, titled "Pope Pius IX (1792-1878, reigned from 1848)," made by the French manufacturer A. Latry et Cie. in the early 1870s. The profile likeness was probably based on an annual pontifical medal from the twenty seventh or twenty eighth year of his reign. Held today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession 2021.20.1.

Pius IX, Figures

The Met's own title for this medallion names the subject and his reign outright, a profile portrait probably based on his own annual pontifical medal.
