A Byzantine apse mosaic in the Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy, completed in 547 CE on a gold background. It shows Emperor Justinian I, haloed and dressed in Tyrian purple, at the centre of a ceremonial procession, flanked by soldiers to one side and clergy, including Bishop Maximian, to the other, asserting his position as leader of both church and state. The basilica is part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna" inscription.
