Dewa Sanzan, the Three Mountains of Dewa, in Yamagata Prefecture, is Shugendo's major pilgrimage complex in northern Japan, standing apart from the Kii mountain range sites around Yoshino and Kumano. Mount Haguro, the smallest, is accessible year round and hosts Hagurosan Shrine; Mount Gassan, the tallest of the three, hosts Gassan Shrine; and Mount Yudono, viewed as the spiritual heart of the complex, hosts Yudonosan Shrine and a goshintai considered directly connected to its god, before which photography is forbidden. Yamabushi make an annual pilgrimage across the three peaks, traditionally read as a journey through death, present suffering and rebirth.
