Liturgiology is the scholarly study of liturgy, the structure, history and meaning of a tradition's formal rites of public worship. It can answer where a rite in current use came from, what it replaced and what its parts are understood to accomplish.

Anton Baumstark and the Method of Comparative Liturgy
Liturgiology's most distinctive method is comparative rather than purely historical: rather than treating one tradition's worship in isolation, the discipline sets its rites for baptism, the eucharist or the divine office side by side across families such as the Roman, Gallican, Antiochene, Alexandrian and East Syrian traditions to see what an older shared layer might have looked like before regional traditions diverged from it. Anton Baumstark, a twentieth century pioneer of the method, argued that liturgical texts develop according to observable patterns rather than at random, most famously that a more archaic form of a prayer or a rite tends to survive longest at the geographic periphery of a tradition, in communities furthest from a center able to revise it, while central and prestigious churches move fastest toward liturgical elaboration and change.
That comparative method turns manuscript variants and regional customs into evidence rather than mere curiosities. A single line preserved in an Ethiopian or East Syrian rite but absent from the Roman equivalent can indicate what an early shared eucharistic prayer contained before Rome revised it. The method has its critics, since a genuinely older text is not always the one found at the margins, but it remains the working assumption behind most attempts to reconstruct how a living rite in use today descended from an earlier common ancestor.
