Bengt Sundkler and Christopher Steed's A History of the Church in Africa, published by Cambridge University Press in 2000, is a major work of scholarship, a one volume history running to 1,232 pages. Its strength is that it covers an enormous span, from the ancient Ethiopian Orthodox Church's fourth century origins through the East African Revival of the 1930s onward, and Sundkler is independently established in this field through his earlier study Bantu Prophets in South Africa. Its limit is the ordinary one for a continent-spanning single volume history: breadth of coverage comes at some cost to depth on any one region or period.
