Articulate Bodies: Forms and Figures at Catalhoyuk, Carolyn Nakamura and Lynn Meskell's 2009 article in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, is peer reviewed archaeology by two established prehistorians applying rigorous, theoretically explicit method to figurines from Catalhoyuk, one of the most carefully excavated Neolithic sites in the world. Its strength is that grounding in careful excavation. Its limit is that interpretation of figurines with no surviving textual explanation remains one reading among others in the field, not a settled consensus on what they meant to the people who made them.
