David Pankenier's study is the standard modern authority on early Chinese astral and calendrical thought, and this record states plainly why it was added alongside the older literature: Joseph Needham's own volume on this subject dates from 1959 and predates the 1978 excavation of the lacquer chest from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, the earliest complete attestation of the twenty-eight xiu, a documented archaeological find Needham's own book cannot address.
