Brigham Young University's own L. Tom Perry Special Collections finding aid for Brigham Young Academy records that Brigham Young deeded property in Provo to a board of trustees, headed by Abraham O. Smoot, on 16 October 1875 to found the academy, that classes began on 3 January 1876, and that the school operated under this name until becoming Brigham Young University in 1903.
