Excavations at the Roman Temple in Lydney Park, Gloucestershire in 1980 and 1981, by P J Casey, B Hoffmann and J Dore, published in The Antiquaries Journal, volume 79, in September 1999, pages 81 to 143, reports a re-excavation and numismatic re-examination of the Romano-British temple complex dedicated to Nodens at Lydney Park, first excavated by R E M Wheeler in 1928 and 1929. Revisiting Wheeler's original dating with fresh stratigraphic and coin evidence, the authors found the religious buildings had their inception in the second half of the third century rather than the fourth century Wheeler proposed, with a genuine refurbishment in the fourth century and serious deterioration only after its middle. Its authority rests on standard peer review by the Society of Antiquaries of London's own journal, a controlled re-excavation of the site rather than a re-reading of Wheeler's published account alone, and numismatic dating evidence independent of Wheeler's original stratigraphic argument.
