A 30 December 2019 Christianity Today report on the sentencing of Pastor Wang Yi, leader of the Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, one of China's most prominent unregistered Protestant house churches. Wang was sentenced to nine years in prison and had personal assets seized, on charges of inciting subversion of state power and illegal business activity, the latter stemming in part from printing books on Christian culture. His congregation was raided and its members detained in December 2018, and his sentence was reported at the time as the longest given to a Chinese house church pastor in a decade.

Facts
Assessment
Reliability Tier
1
Tier two: contemporary reporting from Christianity Today, a religious news publication rather than a wire service or court record, covering the sentencing of Pastor Wang Yi on 30 December 2019. Its strength is that it reports specific, checkable facts, the charges, the sentence length and the church raided, rather than unsourced characterization. Its limit is that it is one publication's contemporaneous account rather than an independently corroborated court record.
Notes
A respected specialist evangelical Christian news outlet reporting on a public criminal sentencing, drawing on court proceedings and the defendant's own legal counsel. It is sympathetic to its subject as a fellow believer's persecution, so its framing leans toward Wang's account of the charges against him, but the sentence, charges and dates themselves are matters of public record independently reported elsewhere, including by Amnesty International. 1
