Wen-djang Chu's monograph was the first comprehensive English-language study of the Hui Muslim uprisings against Qing rule across Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia from 1862 to 1877, drawing on Chinese official records and local histories. Chu treats the revolt's outbreak as rooted in specific communal friction between Han and Hui communities in Shaanxi in 1862 and in failures of Qing provincial governance, tracing the campaigns of local Hui commanders including Ma Hualong and the Ma-clan leaders of Gansu and the eventual Qing reconquest under the general Zuo Zongtang, rather than presenting the revolt as a war organized around Islamic doctrine as such.
