Clark Wissler and the Development of Anthropology in the United States, Stanley A. Freed and Ruth S. Freed's 1983 peer reviewed article in American Anthropologist, is a peer reviewed history of Clark Wissler's culture area concept, developed through the American Museum of Natural History's Plains research, and its reception and critique by Kroeber and others. Its strength is that it is squarely the fact's own subject, the classification device itself, in a peer reviewed disciplinary history journal. Its limit is that it covers the classification device itself, not any one Plains nation's own account of itself, which needs its own separate source.
