Daniel Dennett's Conversion and the Poll Tax in Early Islam, published by Harvard University Press in 1950, is a scholarly historical study. Its strength is that it is a foundational academic treatment of how taxation and religious conversion interacted in the early Islamic period, still cited in later scholarship. Its limit is the ordinary one for a scholarly study of its era: later historians have refined and in places revised some of its specific figures and conclusions using sources unavailable in 1950.
