A book chapter examining the "captured songs" (chants captes) spontaneously received by Simon Kimbangu's followers during 1921, the year his prophetic movement began at Nkamba in the Belgian Congo, and arguing that these revealed hymns functioned as catalysts of the popular uprising that spread through the Lower Congo that year alongside Kimbangu's own preaching. Published in Kimbanguism 100 Years On: Interdisciplinary Essays on a Socio-Cultural Movement, edited by Adrien Nginamau Ngudiankama, part of the African Histories and Modernities series from Palgrave Macmillan.

1
