Independent Egyptian news reporting dated 30 May 2008. States the Coptic Orthodox Church's own 1938 bylaw named nine grounds for divorce, among them years of separation or desertion, declared death, long imprisonment, insanity, danger to a spouse including infectious disease, change of religion or sect, severe assault, taking monastic vows and adultery. States that on assuming office in 1971, Pope Shenouda III rejected the nine grounds and restricted permissible divorce to adultery and change of religion alone. States the church formally amended its own regulations in 2008 to replace the nine original grounds with these same two, adultery and change of religion, and sought a dedicated Christian personal status statute from the Egyptian government to align judicial and ecclesiastical rulings.

Notes
Cited for Coptic Orthodoxy's position on marriage, its detail and how that position developed.
