Sarah Berman's Don't Call It a Cult: The Shocking Story of Keith Raniere and the Women of NXIVM, Steerforth Press, 2021, is an investigative journalism account. Its strength is that Berman covered the case as it unfolded and draws on court testimony and firsthand interviews to reconstruct NXIVM's own internal workings and Raniere's conduct. Its limit is the ordinary one for journalism written close to events still working through the courts: it is a reporter's synthesis rather than an academic study with the benefit of longer historical distance.
