Jane Dammen McAuliffe is a scholar of Islamic studies, and this six-volume Brill reference work, published between 2001 and 2006, is the Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an, a major collaborative scholarly reference with signed entries by specialists across Qur'anic studies. Its strength is exactly that collaborative scholarly structure, each entry is written and signed by a named expert in that specific topic, giving the work real authority across a very wide range of Qur'anic subjects. Its limit is that the publication year recorded here reflects the first volume of a set that continued appearing over several years, so a claim needing the most current scholarship on a topic covered in a later volume should note that entry's own specific publication date within the set.
