Greek Divination: A Study of Its Methods and Principles

W. R. Halliday was a classicist, and this Macmillan and Co. book is his classic survey of ancient Greek divinatory methods and their underlying principles, including astragalomancy, casting lots with knucklebones. Its strength is that it remains a widely cited early systematic survey covering the range of Greek divinatory practice in one place, drawing on the classical textual and inscriptional evidence available. Its limit is its age: it is an early twentieth century survey, so a claim needing current archaeological evidence or more recent classical scholarship on any one divinatory method should be checked against later specialist studies alongside this foundational survey.
