Guns and Rain: Guerrillas and Spirit Mediums in Zimbabwe, David Lan's 1985 scholarly study from James Currey and the University of California Press, is the standard academic study of Shona spirit mediums' role in Zimbabwe's 1970s liberation war, including Mbuya Nehanda's symbolic and, by the book's own account, tactical role. Its strength is that it is the standard study of the liberation war paragraph this source is cited for. Its limit is that the fact's second paragraph, on independent Zimbabwe's post 1980 church state relations under Mugabe, sits after the war this 1985 book studies and is not claimed for it.
