This entry on the Saxon State and University Library Dresden draws on the institution's own history of its collections, tracing its origin to the electoral library founded in 1556 and its 1996 formation from the merger of the Saxon State Library and the Dresden University Library. As an institutional record it is a reliable source for the library's own custodial history, including its stewardship of the Dresden Codex, one of only four surviving pre-Columbian Maya manuscripts. Its limit is that an institution's account of its own collection history is not itself scholarship on the Codex's content or meaning, and questions about the Codex's astronomical tables, calendrical system or authorship require the specialist Mayanist literature the library's own history does not attempt to substitute for.
