Luis Laso de la Vega's Huei tlamahuicoltica, containing the Nican Mopohua, 1649, is a primary devotional text, not independent scholarly analysis. Its strength is that it is the earliest known published account of the Guadalupe apparitions in Nahuatl, the text through which the Nican Mopohua narrative itself reaches the historical record. Its limit is that it is a devotional composition serving the cult it describes, not a neutral historical investigation of the apparition claims, and its own relationship to any earlier oral tradition is a matter of ongoing scholarly argument.
