Hymns for the Drowning, A. K. Ramanujan's translation of Nammalvar's Tamil hymns to Vishnu, published by Princeton University Press in 1981, is a primary devotional text in a standard scholarly translation. Its strength is that Ramanujan was both a major poet and a serious scholar, and this translation of the ninth century Divya Prabandham hymns is widely regarded as the standard English version. Its limit is the ordinary one for any translation: it necessarily carries Ramanujan's own interpretive choices, though his standing in the field is well established.
