Richard Bulliet's Islam: The View from the Edge, published by Columbia University Press in 1994, is a scholarly study by an established historian of Islam. Its strength is that it examines Islam's spread from the perspective of its frontier and convert populations rather than its established centers, an influential methodological approach. Its limit is the ordinary one for a scholarly monograph advancing a particular interpretive framework: it is one historian's reading, argued from that frontier vantage point, not a comprehensive account of Islamic history.
