The Archaeological Survey of India's Dharwad Circle, the government body responsible for the protected monuments of northern Karnataka, records that the Meguti Jain temple at Aihole was completed around 634 CE according to the inscription on its eastern wall, describes its pillared porch, divided antarala and sanctum surrounded by a circumambulatory passage, and identifies that inscription as the Aihole Prashasti composed by the Jain poet Ravikirti in praise of Chalukya emperor Pulikeshi II, containing the earliest epigraphical reference to the poets Kalidasa and Bharavi.
