James R. Walker was a physician who worked among the Oglala Lakota at Pine Ridge from 1896 to 1914 and, with the community's cooperation, recorded extensive material on Lakota religious belief and ceremony; this University of Nebraska Press volume is the standard academic edition of his papers, edited posthumously by Raymond J. DeMallie and Elaine A. Jahner. Its strength is Walker's sustained direct access to Lakota religious specialists of his era, recorded in cooperation with the Colorado Historical Society, and DeMallie and Jahner's careful scholarly editing of that raw material into a usable text. Its limit is that it documents one era's Lakota religious understanding as gathered by one outside observer, however well trusted, so more recent Lakota accounts of their own tradition are the better source for how it is practiced and understood today.
