Peer-reviewed academic historian at the University of Texas at Austin. This is the standard English-language reference work on the European witch trials, now in its fourth edition since first publication in 1987.
Notes
Levack situates the traditional total of around 900 executions across the Prince-Bishopric of Wurzburg under Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg (1623 to 1631) against the smaller number independently documented within the city itself, and cautions that the higher figure descends from confessional-era Catholic accounts with their own reasons to inflate the tally. 1
