Life of Columba

Adomnan of Iona's Life of Columba, completed around 697, is the primary hagiographical account of the sixth century Irish monk Columba, written by a later abbot of the monastery Columba himself founded on Iona, working from oral tradition and earlier written sources within living institutional memory of its subject. Adomnan wrote roughly a century after Columba's death, closer to his subject than most early medieval saints' lives manage. Its strength is that comparative closeness and Adomnan's own position as head of Columba's own foundation, giving him access to community memory a later or outside writer would lack. Its limit is that hagiography as a genre is written to edify and to establish a saint's sanctity through reported miracles, not to provide a neutral historical record, so a claim resting on a specific miracle story should be read as testimony to how Columba was remembered and venerated rather than as a verified historical event.
