Lucid Dreaming as a Learnable Skill: A Case Study, Stephen LaBerge's 1980 paper in Perceptual and Motor Skills, reports his own eye signal verification of lucid dreaming first demonstrated at Stanford in January 1978, an experimental method that let a dreamer signal awareness of dreaming to an outside observer in real time. LaBerge went on to found the Stanford based lucid dreaming research program, and this early paper's authority rests on that peer reviewed, methodologically explicit demonstration. Its limit is that it is a case study of the method's initial development, not a large scale trial. Cite it for the origin of the verification technique.
