Mawangdui silk manuscripts of the Laozi

The Mawangdui silk manuscripts of the Laozi are two Han dynasty era manuscript copies of the Daodejing recovered from the Mawangdui tomb site in 1973, predating by centuries the received text long used for translation, and notably reversing the order of the work's two halves, with one copy carrying no chapter divisions at all, showing that the familiar eighty-one chapter division is a later editorial convention rather than original to the text. Its strength is that it is direct archaeological manuscript evidence, among the oldest Laozi material known, and it materially changed scholarly understanding of the text's early transmission. Its limit is that a translation drawing on these manuscripts still involves interpretive choices about a fragmentary, damaged silk text, so a claim resting on a specific reading of a single passage should be checked against the manuscript's own textual notes rather than treated as an unambiguous recovery of an original.
