Metallic Phase with Long Range Orientational Order and No Translational Symmetry, D. Shechtman, I. Blech, D. Gratias and J. W. Cahn's 1984 paper in Physical Review Letters, is the original report of an aluminium manganese alloy showing icosahedral point group symmetry with no translational periodicity, the discovery of quasicrystals; Shechtman received the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. Its strength is that it is the original peer reviewed discovery paper behind a Nobel Prize winning finding. Its limit, stated as a scope note, is that it should be used for the 1982 observation and 1984 publication of icosahedral quasicrystals specifically, not for a claim about virus structure, which is Caspar and Klug's separate subject.

Reliability Tier1
Tier one: the original peer reviewed discovery paper in Physical Review Letters behind Shechtman's 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Its scope is the 1982 observation and 1984 publication of icosahedral quasicrystals specifically; it is not a source for virus structure, a separate subject. NotesThe original report of an aluminium-manganese alloy showing icosahedral point-group symmetry with no translational periodicity, the discovery of quasicrystals. Shechtman received the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. Use for the 1982 observation and 1984 publication of icosahedral quasicrystals; not a source on virus structure, which is Caspar and Klug's subject.
