Ovid's Metamorphoses is a primary literary text, the first-century Roman poem that has served as the principal transmission point for how many Greco-Roman mythological figures and transformation stories reached later literature and art, including the later forms many mythological creatures took after Ovid's retelling. As a primary text it is authoritative for what a given episode of the poem itself narrates, checkable directly against the text, not for the earlier Greek sources Ovid drew on or altered, which the poem does not itself document and which need a separate classical source to trace. Use it to establish how Ovid's own version of a myth or transformation reads; a claim about an earlier or divergent Greek account of the same story needs a source addressing that specific earlier tradition, since Ovid is a literary retelling rather than the oldest surviving account of most of what it narrates.
