Michael Hicks' Mormonism and Music, published by the University of Illinois Press in 1989, is the standard scholarly history of Latter-day Saint music, tracing the making of the 1835 hymnal and its successors through to the twentieth century. Its strength is that it is a peer-reviewed university press monograph remaining the standard academic reference on the subject. Its limit is that it was published in 1989, before the church's subsequent hymnal revisions and its more recent digital and global expansion of music resources, so a claim about current LDS musical practice needs a more recent source alongside this history.
