Alexis Muston, a French Protestant pastor and historian descended from Waldensian refugee families, wrote the standard nineteenth century narrative history of the Waldenses, first published in French as L'Israel des Alpes in 1851 and translated into English in 1875. Drawing on archival documents including many not previously published, Muston sets the 1655 Piedmontese Easter massacre within the longer history of Waldensian belief and persecution and discusses the fuller toll of the massacre, including deaths from exposure and further violence in the months that followed the initial killings, beyond Morland's own contemporary tally.
