Serena Nanda's Neither Man nor Woman, published by Wadsworth in 1990, is a widely cited ethnographic study of the hijras of India, based on Nanda's own fieldwork and interviews documenting their social organization, religious roles and place within Indian society. Its strength is that it remains a standard textbook reference in anthropology courses on gender and has been reprinted in multiple editions since. Its limit is that its fieldwork dates to the 1980s, and the legal and social status of hijras in India has changed substantially since, including the 2014 Supreme Court recognition of a third gender, so a claim about contemporary hijra life or law needs a more recent source alongside this study.
