USPG, the United Society Partners in the Gospel, publishes this account of its own founding, tracing its identity back to the Reverend Thomas Bray's 1701 royal charter establishing the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, the missionary body that sent clergy and teachers to colonists, enslaved Africans and Native Americans across Britain's American colonies before expanding through the eighteenth century to Canada, the West Indies, Australia and West Africa.
