Out of Time: The Queer Politics of Postcoloniality, Rahul Rao's 2020 scholarly study from Oxford University Press, examines in its second chapter, Re Membering Mwanga, Mourning the Martyrs, the 1885 to 1887 Uganda Martyrs historiography directly: the traditional religious refusal account the canonisation rests on, the competing political sovereignty reading of the executions, and the account's contemporary mobilisation in Ugandan anti homosexuality politics. Its strength is that it is squarely the fact's own subject, engaging the historiographical debate head on. Its limit is that it is a work of political theory engaging that debate, not a neutral church history of the canonisation process itself.
