Outlines of Zuni Creation Myths

A foundational primary ethnographic account of Zuni creation narratives, recorded from direct fieldwork. Its strength is that it preserves a nineteenth century observer's own transcription and translation of the material at firsthand. Its limit, reflected in its tier, is exactly that: it is a single period observer's own record rather than a peer reviewed modern scholarly analysis, shaped by that observer's own methods and the era's ethnographic conventions, so it should be read alongside later Zuni or ethnographic scholarship rather than taken as the final word.

Facts
Assessment
Reliability Tier
2
Tier 2: a foundational primary ethnographic account, discounted from tier 1 because it is a single nineteenth century observer's own transcription and translation.
Notes
Cushing lived among the Zuni from 1879 to 1884 as a participant observer and was initiated into the Priesthood of the Bow in 1881, producing the first substantial written record of the emergence narrative from that unusually close position. Tier 2 rather than tier 1: a foundational primary account, but a single nineteenth century observer's own transcription and translation, read today alongside the later, methodologically distinct work of Bunzel and others rather than treated as a fixed and final text.
