Bargil Pixner's Paths of the Messiah, published in this English edition by Ignatius Press in 2010, is a scholarly study combining archaeology and geography. Its strength is that Pixner was a Benedictine monk and archaeologist who worked and lived in the region he studied, giving the geography and archaeology in the book direct, on the ground grounding. Its limit is that Pixner's approach is explicitly aimed at illuminating the historical Jesus through this evidence, a project with its own interpretive commitments that a purely archaeological study would not carry.
