Physical Principles in the Construction of Regular Viruses, Donald Caspar and Aaron Klug's 1962 paper in Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology, is the founding peer reviewed source for quasi-equivalence theory, the mathematics (T = h^2 + hk + k^2) explaining how identical protein subunits self assemble into spherical shells of 60, 180, 240 and 420 units. Klug later received the 1982 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for related work. Its strength is that it is the original source for a real, still cited physical phenomenon, not a summary of it. Its limit is that it is a technical structural biology paper; this atlas cites it only for the underlying physical geometry, not for any symbolic reading of it.
