Peter M. Whiteley is an anthropologist specializing in Hopi studies, and this academic book, published by Smithsonian Institution Press, critically reexamines earlier twentieth century ethnographic accounts of Hopi religion and society, questioning assumptions and methods of past outside researchers while drawing on Whiteley's own long term fieldwork and relationships with Hopi communities. Its strength is that critical, self reflective stance toward the history of Hopi ethnography itself, showing where earlier accounts oversimplified or misrepresented Hopi religious life. Its limit is that, as a book substantially concerned with critiquing and correcting prior scholarship, some background familiarity with that earlier ethnographic literature helps a reader follow its arguments fully, more than a first introduction to Hopi religion would require.
