Ritual: Perspectives and Dimensions

Catherine Bell was a scholar of ritual studies, and this Oxford University Press book is her standard academic survey of ritual as an analytic category, and its chapter setting out the six basic genres of ritual action, rites of passage, calendrical rites, rites of exchange and communion, rites of affliction, feasting, fasting and festivals, and political rites, is widely used as a comparative framework across the field of religious studies. Its strength is synthesizing a large and often theoretically fragmented body of prior ritual scholarship into one usable analytic structure, tested against ritual examples drawn from many different traditions rather than built from a single case. Its limit is that as a general analytic framework, it necessarily simplifies the specific internal logic of any one tradition's own ritual system, so it should be used as a comparative lens rather than a substitute for that tradition's own account of its rites.
