This is the official narrative history published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints itself, the first volume covering the church's founding period from 1815 to 1846. As the church's own published account it is the correct source for how the LDS Church currently narrates its own founding story for a general readership. Its limit is precisely that institutional authorship, it is written by the church about itself for its own members and interested readers, so a claim requiring independent critical historical assessment of contested founding-era events needs an academic historical source in addition to, rather than instead of, the church's own narrative.

Facts
Assessment
Reliability Tier
2
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' own official narrative history of its founding period, a custodian account produced by the church's history department and written for a general readership. It is not the church's governing or administrative text, the shape that earns tier one alongside the Code of Canon Law, Quaker Faith and Practice, the Nicene Creed and the church's own General Handbook, all of which define offices, ordinances or doctrine in the body's own governing voice. It is also not a lone founder's individually authored account with no institutional process behind it, the shape this corpus keeps at tier three. It sits with the church's own other narrative and informational custodian materials, the Gospel Topics Essays, the Book of Mormon and the Relief Society Research Guide, all correctly at tier two: authoritative for what the church says about its own history, not independent verification of it.
Notes
The church's official narrative history of its founding period; a custodian account written for a general readership.
